Written proposal for Diver’s Inversion as a public artwork.

The artwork proposed herein expresses a figure leaping into air, diving into water.  This invocation of the theme of water is effected by way of a figurative narration:  High atop a platform we see the arcing body of a diver, its point of balance and ascent at the moment of being committed into the plunge.  Heightening our sense of this impending descent is a second figural element in which the subject is depicted as an inverse bas-relief, rendering the diver at the point of entry into water.   This sculptural and optical effect is the aesthetic anchor of the artwork; by generating a collusion of form and void, solid and liquid, earth and sky this architectural conceit generates a moment of aesthetic poise.
