{October 25, 2003} New Works by Sculptor David Robinson October 25 - November 29 2003 In this exhibition of seven new works, David Robinson has enlarged and reworked earlier maquettes such as Device and Desire, Font, and Arc into more fully realized versions. Remaining true to their inspired maquettes, these works command a powerful presence and impact at their new scale. In other new works such as Binary Vision, Archer, and Homo Ex Machina, David continues his work with the figurative tensions between form and content, gravity and suspension, image and object, in a manner both innovative and true to form. David is currently working on several commissions, including two large ornamental bronze screens for the new Four Seasons Hotel in Whistler, BC.
Arc, 2003, bronze, steel, ed. of 9, 56.25" x 108" x 19". Binary Vision, David's latest work, was recently scaled up to this life-size version from a 23" plaster maquette designed for a new home in Vancouver's Coal Harbour. Confronted with the spatial and material problem of an entire wall of mirror glass incorporating a 180 degree view of the city, this figure uses the mirror's doubling effect to singular advantage. Standing astride the line between real and illusory space, the figure coheres in the mind upon contact with its own reflection. Gazing at this piece which itself appears to scan the horizon, one is both drawn into its illusion and compelled by its redirection.
Both the maquette and full sized versions of Binary Vision will be available for viewing at David's representative galleries this summer. To be notified about this, please email the artist at .
Binary Vision, 2003, polymer/gypsum, edition of 6 (bronze edition pending), ½ figure with mirror glass - 76" x 17" x 20".
